These movies bring us to terra incognita -memorable stories involving individuals far out of the cultural or psychological mainstream.  The plots of these films are often built upon human relationship that are complex, oblique, murky, or unorthodox.  The characters’ behaviors and motivations are often conditioned by unique or remote locales such as the Louisiana bayous, central Anatolia, or the Arctic regions.  We will view and critique three movies involving characters whose lives or behaviors are somehow out of bounds, off the rails, or off the grid.  We will focus on directors’ approaches to such unique material as well as learn about dozens of other “movies in the margins.”    

GROUP LEADER:  Jeff Long has offered film studies courses at WISE since 2014 and has been writing movie reviews for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette since 2008.  He also taught film studies courses at Becker College and is the author of the reading guide Remembered Childhoods (2007).
